Presenter Bios

Kathy Hammett has more than 30 years’ experience in U.S. higher education, having held international education positions within student development and academic affairs at a number of institutions, including Louisiana Tech University. She currently serves as Senior Director of the Center for Global Engagement at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. She served as chair of NAFSA: Association of International Educators 2020 Annual Conference and currently is a member of the NAFSA International Education Professional Competencies Commission.  In 2000, she received an International Education Administrators Fulbright to Japan and in 2007, she was selected to visit and present in Myanmar and Thailand as part of the U.S. Department of State Advisor’s Professional Partnership Program. Kathy was awarded the Award for Distinguished Service to NAFSA in 2021.  She has a B.A. in International Studies and an M.S. in College Student Personnel Services, both from Miami University, Ohio. She believes strongly in the power of education and engagement across cultures and feels that the imperative to reach across boundaries has only grown. 

Deborah Walter is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Her areas of expertise include design, and medical imaging. She started college at the University of Maryland (UMD) in College Park. After receiving her PhD at the Pennsylvania State University, she went to work for GE at the Global Research Center. She was in the Computed Tomography laboratory where she helped to design new x-ray CT systems for medical diagnostic and industrial inspection applications. She is a named inventor on 12 patents related to x-ray CT. helped found the Rose Building Undergraduate Diversity (ROSE-BUD) program. She is keenly interested in the design of medical technologies for low-resource settings.

Kyle Kershaw is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.  He earned a BSCE at University of Missouri-Rolla, an MSCE at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a PhD at Missouri University of Science & Technology.  Kyle has nearly 10 years experience in academia and two decades of experience in geotechnical consulting.  His areas of expertise include retaining structure design, deep foundations, and slope stabilization.  He is active in consulting and research in the areas of soil-structure interaction, monitoring of retaining structures, and experiential learning, as well as serving as an advisor to the student chapters of American Society of Civil Engineers and Engineers Without Borders.
