Photo Contest Showcases the Beauty of Mechanical Engineering

BOILer up! by Helen Lai
Copper Nanograss by Rishav Roy
Photoelasticity in Osteomorphic Bricks by Qichang Hu
The first ever Mechanical Engineering Photo Contest showcased the artistic skills of Purdue ME staff, faculty, and students.

The winning photo, entitled "BOILer Up!", was shot by Helen Lai (with help from Taylor Allred), both Ph.D. students in the Cooling Technologies Research Center.

Second place, "Copper Nanograss," was by Ph.D. student Rishav Roy (with help from Xuemei Chen), also Ph.D. students in the Cooling Technologies Research Center. They are studying how copper nanograssed structures, when coated with a low surface energy material, become superhydrophobic.

Third place, "Photoelasticity in Osteomorphic Bricks," was by senior Qichang Hu. Hu studies under Thomas Siegmund in the Microstructure Testing and Analysis Lab, focusing on the stress distribution in topologically interlocked material systems.
