Biography
As an Eagle Scout and the first Hispanic vice president at Intel Corporation, Rick Echevarria says the relationships he’s built, and his lifelong love of learning, are the most enriching aspects of his life.
“Throughout my life and career, I have defined myself by my willingness to commit to tackling undefined challenges and the pursuit of high impact outcomes,” he says. “I can trace several examples throughout my life: becoming an Eagle Scout, creating a professional services organization inside of the world’s largest microprocessor company and becoming the first Hispanic Vice-President at Intel. It is both the learning and relationships built along the way that are the most enriching.”
However, Echevarria's commitment to pursue and use his industrial engineering degree for systems-level thinking wasn’t always set in stone. His moment of reaffirmation came during his senior year while working on the IE 431 capstone course. “I realized it would be my lifelong passion to pursue the integration of people, processes, and technology to deliver optimal outcomes.” He has done just that.
A growth-minded business leader with more than 25 years of success in technology, cybersecurity, professional services, and enterprise software, Echevarria has held a variety of leadership positions with Intel. Most recently, as VP of Sales and Marketing Group, Echevarria has been leading Intel’s Pandemic Response Technology Initiative. This includes the management of a $50 million fund supporting pandemic response and readiness, online learning and ecosystem/partner innovation.
Echevarria says Purdue is a big reason for his professional success. He cites U.S. News & World Report’s No. 5 ranking of Purdue among the most innovative schools in the country, and the Wall Street Journal/Times’ best value ranking of Purdue at No. 7: “This and many other recognitions, are a testament to the impact Purdue alumni have, and will continue to have, in solving the toughest challenges and in discovering and enabling high impact opportunities globally.”
“I am just one of many who, when given the opportunity to lead, has tapped into that Purdue academic preparation and humble ‘let’s get it done, team’ attitude that is at the heart of Purdue culture. Like many others, we just let our work speak for ourselves and for the quality, impact and character of our alma mater.”
Named one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics” by Hispanic Magazine in 2007, Echevarria also serves Purdue and his community. He is currently collaborating with the Ray Ewry Sports Engineering Center for the College of Engineering and has been serving on the Industrial Engineering Advisory Council at Purdue for over eight years. Echevarria is also on the Board of Trustees at the Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon, and on the Board of Directors at ShieldIO, a cybersecurity start-up.
He advises Purdue students to think professionally and strategically from day one: “Start building your network from the time you land on campus and be purposeful in your interactions with people. Think of how the other person benefits from engaging with you. It will pay off immensely.”
