Engineering is a great profession it builds rather than destroys. Engineering education should be inspiring and challenging. It should contribute to the vision of Carl Sandberg, who wrote: 'I see America in the crimson light of a rising sun fresh from the burning creative hand of God. I see great days ahead, great days possible to men and women of will and vision.'

Dwight H. Swanson started his career as a meterman with Central Illinois Electric and Gas Company. He joined Commonwealth Edison, Illinois and became division vice president of Public Service Indiana. He was named chairman and chief executive officer, Iowa Resources, Inc. and held that position until retirement.

Active in his community, he has served on the board of governors of the Iowa State University Foundation and the advisory committee of the Edison Electric Institute. In 1978, he was president of the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and presently he is on the Board of Directors of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and of the Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.

A 1948 graduate of Purdue, he was named a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus in 1974. He received the Religious Heritage of America Award Business and Professional in 1978.
