Robert L. Bowen (BSCE '62), the Donn E. Hancher Distinguished Fellow for the Division of Construction Engineering Management, has won an Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Lifetime Achievement Award from The American Society of Civil Engineers. Bowen is chairman of Bowen Engineering, a general-contracting construction firm headquartered in Indianapolis. His award is for achievement in the field of construction.

Established in 1999, the OPAL awards recognize and honor outstanding civil engineering leaders whose lifetime accomplishments and achievements have made significant differences in one of five categories: Construction, Design, Education, Government, and Management. Bowen has been a major force in the construction industry for many years. He is considered an authority on construction leadership practices and has been instrumental in identifying, documenting, and teaching best practices to construction managers. He also has developed and implemented leadership programs not only within Bowen Engineering, but has trained other firms through the Associated General Contractors of America. Bowen has been and continues to be a leader in engineering education throughout Indiana with his support of K-12 and higher education.
