Hubo Cai

This honor recognizes one faculty member from Purdue University’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering each year for excellence in the counseling of undergraduate students. Award recipients benefit students’ undergraduate careers through offering advice on either educational or personal problems, giving good guidance in developing student curriculums, and assisting in student organization activities.

Cai knows the importance of counseling undergraduate students in addition to supporting them academically as a professor. “Students are at the stage of not just developing technical capabilities, but also preparing for their careers,” says Cai. “As a faculty member who has been [in the same position they are in] and has had a few years of industrial experience, I have the capacity to offer counseling from a unique perspective. My favorite part of helping undergraduates as a counselor is when past students come back with exciting news of starting their careers and they thank me for the tips and advice I had given them in job hunting.”

In addition to giving students career advice, he takes every opportunity to engage in student-organized or student-oriented activities. Cai has served as judge for Purdue’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, attended Women in Engineering banquets, and delivered sessions at Women in Engineering summer camps and 4-H fairs.
