Camila Olivero Araya received her bachelor’s degree (2017) and master’s degree (2019) in industrial engineering from Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción, Chile. Currently, she is a PhD candidate in engineering education at The Ohio State University, where her research focuses on boosting the professional growth of engineering faculty members through three key areas: early career faculty experiences; teaching empathy as a professional skill; and intercultural communication competence in doctorate advising. Her overarching career vision is centered on transforming the engineering culture to one that prioritizes support, wellbeing, and holistic development. She believes that implementing these initiatives can lead to increased collaboration, innovation, and diversity. Her work has been accepted at top conferences in her field, and she has presented at the American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting. She chairs the Graduate Engineering Education Organization and is a frequent reviewer for conferences. Olivero Araya asserts that effective engineering teaching demands a combination of rigorous technical instruction, active student engagement, and a commitment to supporting students’ development. As a professor and mentor, she will create an environment in which students feel supported, empowered, and included, and she will encourage students to become agents of their own success through critical thinking, independent problem-solving, and self-reflection.
