Ozan Akkus
Associate Professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering
Ozan Akkus joined the Purdue faculty in January of 2006 as an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Prior to joining Purdue, he was an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Toledo, where he directed the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Laboratories. He is an NSF CAREER awardee and received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society chapter at the University of Toledo. Prior to joining the University of Toledo, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Orthopaedics in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He received his B.S.M.E. and M.S. in Engineering Sciences from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Akkus' area of research involves understanding the cause of skeletal fragility due to age, disease, overuse and sterilization by using tools of biomechanics and advanced materials characterization techniques. More importantly, he seeks to devise solutions to alleviate the risk of fracture by understanding the role of biomineralization and modulating it, and by developing sensors which predict impending fractures by detecting precursor damage events.
