Ismail Olaniyi — Lagos, Nigeria

Civil Engineering (Geomatics), Ph.D.
Graduation: May 2026

My research focuses on using remote sensing technologies to address spatially related issues. These technologies can help reduce or eliminate food security, transportation, and natural disasters.

Q

What do you hope to do after graduation?

A

I will complete my MS program soon and start my Ph.D. afterward. After graduation, I hope to work in academia as a teaching and research faculty member, utilizing what I have learned to nurture the next generation of scientists and engineers. My program has exposed me to various aspects of geomatics, which I believe will serve me well in academia or the geospatial engineering industry.

Q

What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?

A

The most valuable advice I received during graduate school was to manage my time effectively and to build both social and professional networks. This advice has helped shape my career path, and I am optimistic about the future.

Q

Why did you choose Purdue Engineering for your graduate studies?

A

I chose Purdue Engineering for my graduate studies because I was impressed with its curriculum, instructors, equipment, and overall environment. The Geomatics faculty members at Lyles School of Civil Engineering are among the best in the world, and my advisor Dr. Jinha Jung has been instrumental in guiding me throughout my studies.

Q

If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?

A

Interdisciplinary, Innovative, diverse

Q

What is the coolest thing you have encountered at Purdue?

A

The coolest thing I have encountered at Purdue University is the diverse community and the ease with which one can integrate into the community as an international student.

Q

What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?

A

I attend religious events (Purdue MSA), social events (NSAP, CEGSAC, etc.), and explore the offerings of the Purdue Memorial Union building with friends.

Q

Favorite quote and why:

A

In the words of Roy Bennett, "Always remember people who have helped you along the way, and don't forget to lift someone up." This quote resonates with me because showing gratitude to those who have helped us is a way of thanking God for all He has done for us and helping others grow is one of the reasons for our existence.

Q

Favorite vacation spot and why:

A

New York City. It offers a unique blend of cultures, cuisines, and experiences, making it a top destination for tourists. I had the opportunity to visit the city in the summer of 2022 - the diverse population of the traditions, arts, food, and building architecture blew me away. Visiting the Empire State Building (the country's 9th tallest building and the 45th in the world), sailing on the Ferry to Staten Island, and seeing the Statue of Liberty were amazing experiences.
