At the forefront of this achievement is Purdue’s eXcellence in Manufacturing and Operations (XMO) initiative, which addresses the nation’s most critical manufacturing and supply chain challenges, spanning resilience, commercial competitiveness, national security, and social impact. XMO combines cutting-edge research with scalable, affordable education to ensure America remains a global leader in secure, responsive, and intelligent manufacturing systems.

A legacy of innovation

Purdue’s impact on American manufacturing runs deep. In the 1890s, Purdue Engineering Dean W.F.M. Goss designed the iconic Purdue Lathe, manufactured by students in Heavilon Hall. The machines set a national standard in practical engineering education, with demand outpacing supply, a powerful symbol of Purdue’s early national influence.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Purdue again led the nation, launching foundational research in intelligent and computer-aided manufacturing. It was among the first recipients of a National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Center in Intelligent Manufacturing Systems, which accelerated national progress in automated process planning and laid the groundwork for today’s smart manufacturing technologies.

A modern powerhouse

Purdue’s leadership today is unmatched in scale and influence. With five National Academy of Engineering (NAE) members in manufacturing and supply chain since 2020, the largest top-ranked mechanical engineering and third largest producer of industrial engineering undergraduates in the country, and more than 10 cross-cutting research centers, Purdue’s impact is comprehensive and interdisciplinary. These centers span sectors including defense, space, semiconductors, transportation, digital transformation, biopharma, energy, and advanced supply chains, blending engineering, science, and business.
