Sinfield leads Innovation and Leadership Studies Program

Sinfield bust
Joe Sinfield, associate professor of civil engineering, was named director of the College of Engineering’s new Innovation and Leadership Studies Program in the fall.

The program has a three-pronged mission, offering an innovation and leadership minor for all engineering undergraduates, a graduate-level research component that pursues insights into repeatable patterns of innovation success, and an engagement arm focused on enhancing innovation efforts of units and organizations on- and off-campus.

Sinfield’s research, teaching and professional activities are concentrated on innovation management — particularly in the context of intrapreneurship, entrepreneurship, and engineering education — as well as experimental methods, instrumentation and sensor design.

Joe brings nearly two decades of experience in the formal study and pursuit of innovation to his new role. Prior to Purdue he spent six years as a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company, where he worked in the corporate strategy and innovation and technology management practices. He then pursued an entrepreneurial venture as a Senior Partner helping to build Innosight, LLC, based in Lexington, Massachusetts, into a global innovation consulting and investment firm.

He earned his B.S. degree in civil engineering, summa cum laude, from Bucknell University, and M.S. and Sc.D. degrees in civil and environmental engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Early in his career, he worked as a geotechnical engineer at Haley & Aldrich in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
