As executive director, Dumbacher will lead the world’s largest aerospace technical society. He is an active, 30-year member and longtime volunteer of the institute.

“I am honored to be working with this premier aerospace organization,” he said. “The aerospace industry is vital to our nation’s future in furthering technologies of flight and expanding space exploration. I am thrilled to be working with the board, members, and staff to build on AIAA’s success and further this vibrant organization,” Dumbacher added.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue in 1981 and a master’s in business administration from the University of Alabama in 1984. He completed the Senior Managers in Government study program at Harvard University.

Dumbacher became a faculty member at Purdue in August 2014 after retiring from NASA, where he spent more than three decades. At NASA, Dumbacher most recently served as deputy associate administrator in the Exploration Systems Development Division for the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate.

“Returning to my alma mater was fun and a great opportunity to try my hand at helping prepare the next generation for the future. I truly appreciate all of the support of Dr. Shih as the Head of School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Dean Jamieson in giving me this opportunity. I will miss the wonderful Purdue students, world class faculty and staff, and the Midwestern approach to life.”
