ChE alumna named Virginia Tech dean

Julia Myers Ross (BSChE ’90) has been named dean of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. She currently serves as dean of engineering and information technology at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), which is ranked No. 4 on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Most Innovative Schools.

A recipient of Purdue’s Outstanding Chemical Engineer Award in 2015, Ross has been awarded nearly $10 million in external grants for her research in cellular engineering and engineering education at UMBC. She also has served there as chair of the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering, and a special assistant to the provost for inter-institutional research initiatives.

She is a fellow of the American Council on Education and an elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. She also has received the Sharon Keillor Award from the American Society for Engineering Education and an NSF CAREER Award.

Her appointment at Virginia Tech will begin July 31.
