CEM alum receives ASCE award
Purdue alum Madelaine “Maddie” Johnson (BSCEM ’09) is a member of the group recognized with the award. Johnson has been active in the group and a board member for the past five years.
The Committee on Younger Members chose Illinois Section Younger Member Group for this award based on the group’s active membership with volunteers who organize and participate in numerous educational, charitable, and social events all year. Their numerous activities promoted outreach, professional development, and diversity and contributed to developing future civil engineering leaders in Chicago. The Illinois Section YMG planned and hosted a total of 10 social events throughout the year, with an emphasis on networking and continuing education.
“We were very excited to receive this national award as our group has really grown in our professional, technical, social, outreach, and community service activities the past five years,” said Johnson.
This group was involved in six K—12 outreach programs, including E-week at the Chicago Architecture Foundation and the Girl Scouts STEMapalooza. This YMG also played an integral part in the Future City Regional Competition and the MATHCOUNTS Chicago City Competition, in which over 400 middle school students competed, run by the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers. The Illinois YMG successfully organized the 2016 ASCE Multi-Region Leadership Conference (MRLC), held in Chicago in January 2017.
The Younger Member Group Award recognizes the most outstanding Younger Member Groups of the previous year.
