Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence has the potential to be one of the most transformative technologies of our time, but like any powerful technology it comes with risks and raises questions: how can we ensure AI is built safely, fairly and reliably? How can we ensure it accrues benefits to the majority? How can we ensure it is used responsibly? Lila Ibrahim will talk about her approach to these challenges as COO of leading research lab DeepMind, and why interdisciplinary collaboration is core to making progress in AI, and mitigating against the risks it brings.

Biography

Lila Ibrahim joined DeepMind last April as their first ever Chief Operations Officer, tasked with taking DeepMind to the next level and managing their next phase of growth. Prior to this Lila was the Chief Operations Officer of Coursera, where she was responsible for Talent, People Operations, and Business Operations (finance, IT, facilities). Her previous leadership roles include Chief Business Officer and President, where she included the seeding and building of Coursera's international market development, business development, and government and enterprise initiatives which were spun off to a new business organization in June 2016.

While at Coursera, she served as a Senior Operating Partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), where she focused on the firm's digital and greentech portfolios until 2015. Additionally, she worked specifically with KPCB partner John Doerr as Chief of Staff.

Before joining KPCB in 2010, Ibrahim had a diverse 18-year career that spanned technical, marketing and management positions at Intel. She was General Manager of Intel's Emerging Markets Product Group. Based in China, she led research, development and marketing of technology solutions, including solutions for global education. Earlier, she served as Chief of Staff to Intel Chairman Craig Barrett.

Lila is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute, an honour bestowed on emerging leaders. She sits on the Board of Directors for Gannett and is a Co-founder and Chair of Team4Tech, a non-profit that matches skilled volunteers from the tech industry with educational and entrepreneurial projects in developing countries. She has also received national recognition from the Anita Borg Institute (Women of Vision, 2010) and has been featured on the cover of ForbesWoman for promoting women in technology.

Outside of work, Lila has established several computer labs at the Lebanese orphanage where her father was raised. She holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University.
