From the Dean: May 2019

Dear Purdue Engineering Community,

Two weeks ago, on 2019 Purdue Day of Giving, Purdue Students Engineering Foundation again received the most number of gifts among all student organizations on campus. And our relay run team, consisting of students, staff, faculty and an alumnus, had a great time running the 20.19 miles relay. Purdue Engineering received about 2600 gifts totaling over $20M on that day, both became new records and demonstrated the commitment by many supporters to make education here affordable and research excellence sustainable.

On the same day, Indiana state legislature passed the 2019-2021 budget that approved the requested $60M for the $80M Gateway Building I (one of the three buildings in the Gateway Complex). The overall Gateway Complex emerged as just a remote idea in September 2017. It became a viable concept in December 2017, and then rapidly had its first building as a Board approved priority in June 2018. Now we will move forward with the largest academic facility in Purdue’s recent history. The exact allocation of Gateway Buildings I and II, as well as a renovated Potter as Gateway III, will be determined as we get further into the projects.

Gateway Complex and Zucrow Aerospace District are two of the many facility projects that are either on-going or under planning, as part of the College Space Plan 2017-2027 unveiled by Robert Frosch last year. Indeed, 16 such projects are enabling all 11 Schools and many student groups to pursue their bold plans for learning, research and engagement.

In the next academic year, Professor Frosch will be serving an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow. While he is on this meaningful leave of absence, Professor Panagiota Karava from the Lyles School of Civil Engineering will be the Acting Associate Dean for Facilities and Operation. The College Cabinet in 2019/20 will have the following outstanding colleagues:

Kelly Busch, Chief of Staff
Jason Dietz, Director of Financial Affairs
Eckhard Groll, Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Global Programs
Pedro Irazoqui, Associate Dean for Research and Innovation
Panagiota Karava, Acting Associate Dean for Facilities and Operations
Arvind Raman, Senior Associate Dean of the Faculty and Staff
Dana Weinstein, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs
Alyssa Wilcox, Senior Associate VP for Advancement
