The principles of problem definition and solution which we learn in... engineering education, provide us with a powerful set of tools... (which)... afford the engineer the opportunity and the responsibility to assume a leadership role across a broad spectrum of society.

Steven J. Balser, a 1969 bachelor's degree graduate of Purdue University, is the president of Power Technologies, Inc. After completing his bachelor's degree, he worked for the American Electric Power Service Corporation for a year, and then he returned to Purdue. He completed his master's degree in 1972 and remained to complete his doctoral work under a National Science Foundation Fellowship.

From 1974 until 1976 Balser worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board in England. Stationed in London, he developed mathematical and computer models to study switching surge phenomenon for 400 kv super grid transformers. Returning to the United States in 1976, Balser joined Power Technologies, Inc. (PTI) where he specialized in insulation coordination studies and later developed specialized simulators and instrumentation systems for modeling and recording transients on electrical power systems. At PTI, Balser rose from department manager, to corporate treasurer, to member of the board of directors, and is currently president of the company.

He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the author of technical papers on a variety of topics related to the electric power industry. Active in his community, Balser is on the board of the Chamber of Commerce and the local Economic Development Corporation.
