Rachel Gehr — New York, U.S.

Engineering Education, Ph.D.
Graduation: December 2025

I am working on the Scalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement (SCALE) K-12 project that provides integrated STEM curriculum introducing microelectronics to students in Indiana. Microchip design and manufacturing is a rapidly growing industry and I am excited to motivate students to pursue this field.

Q

What do you hope to do after graduation?

A

I would like to utilize my background in environmental engineering and engineering education to provide approachable education concerning water quality research, policies, and practices. I am hoping to do this either on the community scale to conduct public outreach, or to work alongside policymakers to encourage them to make informed decisions about sustainable practices.

Q

What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?

A

One recurring piece of advice I have received is that no two doctoral degrees look the same, so you should not compare yourself to other graduate students. I have often felt "behind" or been concerned that my path was not as polished as other students'. However, I have learned that my PhD journey has prepared me well for where I need to be and my career goals, and it does not matter if it looks different from the experiences of other graduate students.

Q

Why did you choose Purdue Engineering for your graduate studies?

A

I chose to attend Purdue for my PhD in engineering because this university is conducting novel, creative research and the faculty and staff do a wonderful job of preparing their graduates to be leaders and innovators.

Q

If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?

A

Innovative, Resourceful, Engaging

Q

What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?

A

I love to be active and outdoors – you can often find me hiking, kayaking, working out, playing sports, or walking my dogs, Leo and Molly.

Q

Favorite quote and why:

A

"We will chase perfection, and we will chase it relentlessly, knowing all the while we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence." – Vince Lombardi I love this quote for two reasons; as a former collegiate athlete, I appreciate the motivation Coach Lombardi provided for his players to never give up, but to keep training and pursuing the best you can be. As a researcher, I love that this quote acknowledges that we cannot achieve perfection, but if we work hard and do our best, we will achieve excellence. While my research or PhD journey may never be absolutely perfect, I will work to be the best version of myself so that I can excel in my field.

Q

Favorite food and why:

A

Nothing can beat German food! My grandparents speak fluent German and I have many fond memories from my childhood of my grandmother teaching me words in German while we cooked together in her kitchen. She wrote down all of our family recipes for me so now I can enjoy cooking them for my friends at Purdue!
