Edmond Rogers — Texas, U.S.

Biomedical Engineering, Ph.D.
Graduation: May 2023

I am interested in the molecular pathogenesis of neurodegeneration, and exploring the connection between traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and chronic neurodegenerative disorders via cellular mechanisms utilizing in vivo, in vitro, and in silico technologies. Ultimately, I hope to improve the quality of life for TBI and Alzheimer's Disease patients by identifying new targets for therapeutic intervention.

Q

What do you hope to do after graduation?

A

I plan to pursue a career as a physician-engineer, and will enter the Indiana University School of Medicine in the Fall.

Q

What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?

A

A former professor told me that graduate school is "almost as much about the journey as it is the destination." It's simple advice, but it has really helped me keep things in perspective at challenging times during my PhD.

Q

Why did you choose Purdue Engineering for your graduate studies?

A

Purdue Engineering has the infrastructure to support all my research needs and career goals, in an incredibly collaborative and supportive environment. Boiler up!

Q

If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?

A

Innovation Collaboration Dedication

Q

What is the coolest thing you have encountered at Purdue?

A

While I have greatly enjoyed the MRI machines on campus and fabrication suites in the state-of-the-art Birck Nanotechnology Center, PUR-1 (Indiana's first and only nuclear reactor) is by far the coolest thing that I have seen at Purdue!

Q

What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?

A

I normally go running with my exercise partner and oversized lap dog Ms. Daisy Mae! We love exploring the surrounding parks and trails that run through campus and West Lafayette. Our current favorite spots include the Boilermaker Cross Country Course, Horticulture Park, and the Celery Bog!

Q

What's something unique about you, or something most people don't know?

A

I am also a classically trained musician that studied both low brass and guitar.

Q

Favorite vacation spot and why:

A

Pretty much anywhere that I can bring my dog. Daisy loves hiking mountain trails and chasing ocean waves, but now we actually spend most of our free time enjoying Indiana's state parks. We really like playing on the beach at The Dunes, hiking the trails at Turkey Run, and look forward to checking out Brown County State Park this summer!
