Nikhilesh Chawla, the Associate Dean for Engineering in Indianapolis and Ransburg Professor in the School of Materials Engineering, has been made a fellow of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). TMS is the premier society in the field of Materials Science and Engineering.

The Class of Fellow is TMS’s highest honor. TMS places a limit to 100 active fellows world-wide, so obtaining fellowship status is extremely difficult. To be inducted, a candidate must be recognized as a leading authority and contributor to the practice of metallurgy, materials science and technology. This includes scholarship, such as the publication of articles or books; the granting of patents; direction of important research or engineering work; and responsibility through management for nationally known improvements and developments in the field. A strong consideration is also given for outstanding service to TMS.

Chawla’s citation reads, “For advancing 4D characterization techniques to predict and describe material performance across multiple classes of materials.”

On receiving the award, Chawla notes, “It is an honor to be selected as a TMS fellow. I feel humbled to be included among so many luminaries in the field of materials science and engineering. The collaborative and dynamic environment at Purdue, as well as amazing graduate students and postdocs, contributed significantly to this award.”

The award will be given during the TMS 2025 Annual Meeting & Exhibition held from March 23-27 in Las Vegas.
