Dr. H. Parker received the prestigious 2018 Study Abroad Vision Award on April 4th, 2018. This competitive award is given once a year to the Study Abroad Leader who was most effective contributing to fulfill CILMAR’s vision by imbedding intercultural learning, mentorship, and assessment in the study abroad context. Dr. Parker designed a 2-week STEP-Abroad program in Colombia which had significant intercultural developmental gains: 70% of the students increased one or more Developmental Orientations as determined by the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) ®. In addition, 64% of the students were in the initial 2 developmental orientations before the program, indicating a trend towards a monocultural mindset. After the program, only 18% of students remained in these orientations, indicating a shift towards a more multicultural mindset. These positive results are not common in programs of short duration.

During the same award ceremony, Margaret Hegwood, GEP2’s Graduate Teaching Assistant, and Dr. Parker were also awarded an Intercultural Research Mini-Grant to develop and innovative off-campus multicultural activity, which is part of the Global Engineering Learning Community. The activity involves visiting US cities to explore the various Micro-cultures within our country. The first visit will be to Chicago, where students will interact with the Chicago Council and explore immigration, industrialization, social change, segregation, and community through the varied Asian, Hispanic, European, and African-American communities in this region. The United States of America has a wealth of diversity and micro-cultures ready to be explored; our students can also learn and develop their intercultural skills from this type of activities without having to leave the US.

These programs are part of the Global Competence Initiative (GCI), a comprehensive program soon to be launched by the CoE to more intentionally develop an assess intercultural and global learning skills in our students.
