Jamieson also delivered the commencement address, telling graduates about her experiences as a first-generation college student and attending graduate school when there weren’t many female students.

NJIT awards honorary degrees to recognize outstanding individuals “whose accomplishments are of such excellence that they provide inspiration to graduates.” Among other things, Jamieson was recognized for founding the Engineering Projects in Community Service program (EPICS) at Purdue, serving as the 2007 President and CEO of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and her membership in the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
