Chandrasekar, Wachs honored for 2017 patents

Two IE professors were honored for new patents at a 2017 Inventors Recognition Dinner in November.

Purdue IE faculty whose inventions were patented during the 2016-17 fiscal year are:

  • Srinivasan Chandrasekar, professor of industrial engineering — (1) Method of Producing Textured Surfaces (Patent No. 9,527,134; joint patent with Dr. James Mann); and (2) Large Strain Extrusion Machining Processes and Bulk Forms Produced Therefrom (Patent No. 9,687,895)
  • Juan Wachs, associate professor of industrial engineering — Simulated Transparent Display with Augmented Reality for Remote Collaboration (Patent No. 9,503,681)

ABSTRACTS

Simulated Transparent Display with Augmented Reality for Remote Collaboration

A method and system for remote collaboration and remote instruction utilizing computing devices at trainee site and mentor sites are disclosed. Annotations are superimposed onto a trainee’s view of a view field displayed using a simulated transparent display with augmented reality (“AR”). By tracking the position of the trainee’s viewpoint, the position of the trainee’s computing device, and the geometry of the view field, the annotations remain anchored to the image of the view field when the trainee device moves and/or when the view field deforms or becomes occluded.

Method of Producing Textured Surfaces

Methods suitable for producing textured surfaces in surfaces of objects, by which the methods are able to achieve a desired three-dimensional surface topography and optionally a desired subsurface microstructure through the use of a controlled modulation machining technique. The methods include selecting a predetermined surface texture for a surface of a body and then imposing a superimposed sinusoidal feed-modulation on a cutting tool so as to move the cutting tool in a feed direction relative to the body while machining the body with the cutting tool and generating a machined surface of the body. The surface texture of the machined surface is intentionally controlled by at least he modulation amplitude and the modulation frequency of the superimposed sinusoidal feed-modulation.

Large Strain Extrusion Machining Processes and Bulk Forms Produced Therefrom

Processes by which bulk forms can be produced in a single continuous operation, as opposed to multi-stage deformation processes that involve a series of separate and discrete deformation operations or stages. Such processes generally entail deforming a solid body using a large-strain extrusion machining technique and deformation conditions that obtain a predetermined crystallographic texture in the continuous bulk form that differs from the crystallographic texture of the solid body.
