Inez Hua, professor of environmental and ecological engineering and civil engineering; William Oakes, director of Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS), and professor of engineering education; and Carla Zoltowski, assistant professor of engineering practice in electrical and computer engineering, have received 2016-17 awards from the Purdue Learning Communities program.

Hua, an instructor for the Engineering for the Planet Learning Community, was chosen by LC students to receive the Learning Community Real-World Experience Award. The award goes to instructors who use events and activities to introduce LC students to real-world opportunities in their academic fields.

Oakes, an instructor for the EPICS Learning Community, received the Advocate Award, which is given to instructors whose LC students credit them with going above and beyond the expectations of their role. Oakes and Zoltowski, who also is an instructor for the EPICS LC, were both among a group of instructors who received the Learning Community Academic Connection Award. The award recognizes LC instructors who plan events and activities that directly connect classroom learning with hands-on experiences.

The awards were announced by Jim Pukrop, associate director of residential academic initiatives, and Justin Hamman, program coordinator of residential academic initiatives.
