ME’s Mahmoudian creates mobile docking system for marine robots to extend operation time

Robots can be amazing tools for search-and-rescue missions and environmental studies, but eventually they must return to a base to recharge their batteries and upload their data. A Purdue mechanical engineering team has created a mobile docking system for autonomous underwater vehicle (AUVs), enabling them to perform longer tasks without the need for human intervention.

Purdue University President Mitch Daniels announced on Friday (Oct. 2) that the university’s flagship Purdue Polytechnic High School will honor Purdue alumnus Edmund O. Schweitzer III and Beatriz Schweitzer for their $4 million commitment to programs and scholarships to support the educational and career success of underrepresented students.

Anonymous $1M cash gift to establish scholarships for Black Engineering students

An anonymous $1 million cash gift from a member of the Purdue University College of Engineering community will establish scholarships named in honor of the college’s first Black graduate, David Robert Lewis, as an impetus to energize and expand ongoing support to recruit and retain Black engineering students.

Second class of Purdue Engineering Fellows announced

The Purdue College of Engineering named its 2020-2021 Engineering Fellows during a recent virtual event. Thanks to the generosity of benefactors Robert H. Buckman (BSChE ’59) and his wife, Joyce A. Mollerup, five students each will receive a $10,000 gift upon graduation in 2021. Students are free to use the funds in any endeavor they see fit.

ME's Ramani team creates NSF-funded AR/VR prototype for manufacturing workforce

Workforce education in manufacturing has traditionally been very low-tech: in-person teaching sessions, one-on-one apprenticeship, written manuals, and perhaps a video. But to keep pace with an increasing skills gap, some manufacturers are now turning to augmented and virtual reality to teach their workers new skills. A Purdue team has entered into a $5 million cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create an augmented and virtual reality experience prototype called Skill-XR.
