From the Dean: December 2018

Dear Purdue Engineering Community,

We are proud of the 886 engineering students who received their BS, MS and PhD degrees, including 76 who received online master’s degrees, at Winter Commencement yesterday, where the Commencement Speaker was retired Major General Theresa Carter, one of our outstanding IE alumna.

For undergraduate students who will graduate from Purdue in the future, we hope almost all of them will have participated in at least one of the four co-curricular opportunities we now call “GRIP”:

G for Global exchange and competency
R for undergraduate Research
I for Industry co-op
P for student club Projects

For example, this month we are expanding the SURF summer program to enable more undergraduates to participate in research during the academic year, under supervision of faculty and possibly earning credits. The new Office of Undergraduate Research in the College is led by Professor John Howarter, and run jointly between Education and Research.

As we approach the end of the year, we are also excited that Engineering continues to be an engine for Purdue. We have been eager to partner with other colleges at Purdue over the past year, and we deeply appreciate the collaborations with colleagues from these colleges. A partial and growing list includes:

  • Ag-Engineering: School of ABE (continues to be #1 in US!), LORRE Center, OATS Center, WHIN project, and Ag-Eng Day earlier this year.
  • Krannert - Engineering: new MS/MBA 2 degrees in 2 years, entrepreneurship collaboration and “roadshow" in Silicon Valley.
  • Polytechnic - Engineering: Gateway Complex, BIDC maker space, IN-MaC for manufacturing, PEGASES for aviation, and MS with Navy Crane
  • Science - Engineering: Quantum and Nanotechnology collaboration
  • HHS - Engineering and Pharmacy-Engineering: IE/RCHE healthcare engineering collaboration
  • CLA - Engineering: Theater Engineering program, and the new "engineering for non-engineers” courses,
  • and,
  • IU School of Medicine - Purdue Engineering: Joint NIH grants, joint students, USAID LASER PULSE, dual MD/PhD, and a new dual MD/MS program to be announced soon.

Wonderful collaborations & Happy Holidays!
