The existence of this truth can be difficult for those of us who do not experience oppression and racism on a daily basis to accept. However, it is important we recognize that just because something is not our reality, does not mean that it does not exist.”

We live in a complex and imperfect world; one that is simultaneously beautiful and heartbreaking. 2020 has reflected this reality. The oppression and systematic racism that remains in our country against the Black community -- and in our university -- is unacceptable. It is heartbreaking. The existence of this truth can be difficult for those of us who do not experience oppression and racism on a daily basis to accept. However, it is important we recognize that just because something is not our reality, does not mean that it does not exist. Admitting that it does is the first challenging step in changing it. The widespread response and action taken by so many has shown the beauty of our world and humanity. It reveals the intrinsic yearning of the human soul for good. We CAN do better. We may do it imperfectly, but we can try. It is worth trying.
