President/Rector, University of Iceland

Dr. Jon Atli Benediktsson
"At the Purdue School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, I had exceptional training in the fields of image analysis, information processing of multisource data, and classification of hyperspectral remote sensing imagery. The research program was cutting-edge and the advisors were outstanding. I learned a lot from my advisors, Philip H. Swain, David A. Landgrebe, and Okan K. Ersoy regarding innovation, work ethic, and leadership in academia. Furthermore, I very much enjoyed living in West Lafayette. "

Dr. Jón Atli Benediktsson has served as the President/Rector of the University of Iceland since July 1, 2015. He has been on the faculty of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Iceland since 1991 and professor since 1996. From 2009-2015 he was the Pro- Rector of Science and Academic Affairs. His research interests are in remote sensing, image analysis, biomedical analysis of signals, pattern recognition, and signal processing, and he has published extensively in those fields.

Dr. Benediktsson was the 2011-2012 President of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) and the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing (TGRS) from 2003-2008. Dr. Benediktsson is a co-founder of the biomedical start-up company Oxymap. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of SPIE.
