David. J. Dries earned his BSEE from Purdue University in 1975 and his MSEE at Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago in 1977. Dr. Dries is the chief surgeon for HealthPartners Medical Group and holds the John F. Perry Jr. Chair in Trauma Surgery for the University of Minnesota, where he has worked since 1999. After completing his medical school training, Dr. Dries trained in general and thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Dries worked as an engineer and clinician on the research team working on the electrohydralic and pneumatic artificial heart program in the Division of Artificial Organs at the University of Utah in 1982. During this time, the Utah team completed the first clinical implantation of the Jarvik 7 artificial heart. Dr. Dries completed his general surgical training at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center followed by a fellowship in surgical critical care at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Dries remained on the faculty there for 12 years and directed surgical critical care and the LIFESTAR Air Medical program. He also served as the division head for trauma and burn care at the University of Michigan. Dr. Dries was recruited to Regions Hospital in St. Paul and the University of Minnesota in 1999. He sits on the editorial boards of The Journal of Trauma, Critical Care Medicine, and Shock, all leading journals in this field. He has co-edited 20 books and has published more than 500 reviews, chapters, commentaries, and primary medical publications.
