A native of Hawaii, Harrison "Harry" Miyahira chose to study at Purdue where he worked on the engineering staff at WBAA and was in charge of maintaining the radio system for the Purdue campus police. He received his BS in electrical engineering in 1957, was commissioned at the same time, and spent the next two years at Fort Monmouth and Fort Ord.

Upon completing his military service in 1960, he joined Space Technology Laboratories where he worked on a variety of space communication systems and was awarded several patents. In 1969, he joined Soladyne International Inc. as executive assistant to the president and assumed a broad spectrum of business responsibilities that helped prepare him to found HM Electronics, Inc. in 1971.

HM Electronics’ core business initially was in the entertainment business, and HM developed the first wireless full-duplex intercom system. In 1982, the company revolutionized the quick service restaurant business by developing the first wireless drive-thru intercom system, which is now the industry standard. The product line has been expanded with several models, including an infrared system, and with accessories such as lane timers and message repeaters. HM Electronics also manufactures products for the security and surveillance market.

Miyahira is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego County YMCA, the Board of Directors of the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, and the Advisory Board of Advanced Mobile Solution, Inc. He is chairman of the Board of Directors of Commercial Electronics, Inc. and HM Electronics, Inc. He is past chairman of the CEO Roundtable of the AEA, San Diego Council, and an elder in the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church.
