Getting Help Through CAPS
- When a student calls CAPS at (765) 494-6995, an appointment is made for a phone consultation that will occur within three days.
- If student is in crisis, student is connected to a therapist to address immediate concerns. If not in crisis, student is scheduled for a brief phone consultation. (Urgent initial consultations occur within 72 hours. Routine consultations within 2-3 weeks.)
- At phone consultation, student's concerns and CAPS services are discussed.
- Based off student's level of need and desired services, student may be set up for a workshop, group therapy, referred to appropriate community provider, or scheduled for further consultation.
- At initial consultation, more information is gathered. Student is then referred to the appropriate service, whether it be brief therapy with CAPS, a referral to community provider, group therapy or workshop, psychiatry services, campus resources, etc.

CAPS Email Policy
Email is not to be used for discussion of clinically sensitive issues.
Because the confidentiality of email, sent or received, cannot be guaranteed, it is a policy of CAPS that staff will not answer any therapy-related questions via email to preserve the confidential nature of therapy services.
When CAPS staff respond to email of a clinical nature, they will do so through Filelocker, which is a secure message communication system created for Purdue University. CAPS staff will send a brief message to you through email informing you that a secure message is waiting for you in Filelocker.
We cannot guarantee a same-day response to your email.
If you are having a non-life threatening emergency, please call CAPS at (765) 494-6995, Monday-Friday. For after-hours emergencies, call CAPS at (765) 494-6995 and chose option 1. For life-threatening emergencies, call 9-1-1.
FAQs
Who is eligible for services at CAPS?
All enrolled Purdue students are eligible for psychological services. Sometimes other persons important in your life, such a partner, spouse, or friend, may be involved in the therapy process as well and does not have to be a Purdue student. However, spouses and partners who are not Purdue students can only participate in therapy as part of a therapy dyad with an enrolled Purdue student.
How do I contact CAPS?

For emergencies: Call 911 and ask to speak with a CIT officer.
What does CAPS offer?
CAPS services include educational workshops, group treatment, short-term individual therapy, substance use evaluations, care management, specialist consultation, case management, emergency response and psychiatric consultation.
Who will I be speaking with?
When you first call CAPS, the person answering the phone will ask you if this is an emergency. If it is an emergency, you will receive further instructions. All other callers will be invited to schedule a 15-minute phone consultation with a CAPS clinician. Based upon your availability, this phone appointment should occur within three days, but often can be scheduled the same day or the next day. At the phone appointment, types of services and providers will be discussed with you.
What if I need to speak to a therapist immediately?
Students at Purdue have 24-hour access. Call CAPS at (765) 494-6995. During business hours, Monday through Friday 8 a.m-5 p.m., CAPS has staff therapists available to talk to you about more urgent issues.
After hours, still call CAPS and then press 1. You will be connected to a therapist through ProtoCall, a provider CAPS partners with.
In the case of an emergency, please call 911.
If I go to CAPS for help, does it mean there is something wrong with me?
Absolutely not. Reaching out for help shows you are interested in personal growth. Many students face difficulties with stress, emotions, relationships, and normal developmental concerns. CAPS is a resource to help you learn effective coping strategies and learn to adjust to the world around you.
What if I’m seeking a specific type of treatment?
Please do not hesitate to ask for what you are seeking. Clinicians and staff with CAPS will work with you to coordinate the treatment you desire, be it at CAPS or helping you find the appropriate services elsewhere.
Will the services at CAPS cost me anything?
Most services at CAPS are provided to students at no charge. For more specific information about fees, please call us.
