Song Zhang
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Song Zhang received his B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2000, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Stony Brook University in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
Dr. Zhang spent three years at Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow before joining Iowa State University where he was as an assistant and associate professor for 6.5 years.
Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on superfast 3D optical sensing/imaging and 3D video telepresence, and exploring application areas that such platform technologies could conquer their challenges. His current research projects involves developing multi-scale superfast 3D optical sensors to capture extremely rapidly changing biological and mechanical events (e.g., beating hearts, flying animals, flying particles in the air stream); developing high-accuracy 3D optical sensing technologies for quality control in manufacturing industry; and developing small footprint real-time 3D optical sensors for human computer interaction, virtual reality, and biometrics applications.
