Laura Almeida Tinjaca — Colombia

Master's
Graduation: August 2025

I'm analyzing the environmental impact of transitioning to electric vehicles through simulation and data analysis, focusing on greenhouse gas emissions. This research is crucial for policymakers, urban planners, and consumers to understand the potential benefits and unintended consequences of this transition.

Q

What do you hope to do after graduation?

A

I hope to work in environmental consulting, conducting environmental assessments, performing fieldwork, and assisting clients with a range of environmental service needs.

Q

What was the most valuable advice you received before or during graduate school?

A

One of the most valuable pieces of advice I received during grad school was to avoid comparing myself to other students. Everyone has their own path, unique skills, and timeline. This mindset was relieving, allowing me to focus on my own progress and celebrate my personal achievements.

Q

Why did you choose Purdue Engineering for your graduate studies?

A

For its unique Environmental Engineering graduate program that offers both the classical engineering and industrial sustainability branches. My focus is on the latter.

Q

If you could describe Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs in 3 words, which would you choose?

A

Top-tier, Diverse and Innovative

Q

What is the coolest thing you have encountered at Purdue?

A

Purdue's Nuclear Reactor, the only operating reactor in Indiana, is on the coolest things that I've encountered. While it's primarily used for research and teaching, touring it and learning about its role in energy planning and policy development was truly mind blowing.

Q

What do you do for fun at Purdue or nearby?

A

I enjoy running with friends on trails like Happy Hollow and Celery Bog Nature Area. I also love exploring new restaurants and cafes in Lafayette, visiting local bookshops, and checking out places like Wolf Park!

Q

Favorite food and why?

A

Right now, it's ramen because it's a comfort food that always puts me in a good mood. It's perfect for cold days when I'm really hungry and craving something cozy with a homemade feel.

Q

Favorite vacation spot and why?

A

Nuqui, located on Colombia's Pacific Coast. It's a hidden gem where the jungle meets the ocean, creating a truly magical and paradisiacal setting. I visited for what watching, and the experience was incredible. The local communities are fully in charge of tourism, ensuring that the land is preserved and that visitors experience its natural beauty in a sustainable and respectful way.
