Dr. John Lumkes

Assistant Professor of Agricultural and Biological Engineering

Dr. John Lumkes joins Purdue University as an Assistant Professor in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. He earned a B.S. in Engineering from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI; an M.S. in Engineering from the University of Michigan; and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin—Madison.

Prior to Purdue, he taught in the M.E. program for seven years at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. There, he developed and taught several continuing education seminars for practicing engineers in the areas of control systems and modeling. The material he developed for the controls seminar was expanded and is now published as a textbook aimed at senior undergraduate and early graduate student levels. His involvement with SAE also expanded outside of MSOE. He served on the local section's board as the Vice Chair of Student Activities and is currently serving on two national committees: the Aerospace Programs Office and the Aero Design Competition rules committee. Dr. Lumkes also coached Cross-Country, started a new Track and Field program, advised the SAE Formula car and Airplane student design competition teams, and worked with four-to-five graduate students at a time, receiving funding from companies like CAT, John Deere, Motorola and Bucyrus.

Professor Lumkes teaches ABE 205, Engineering Computations for Biological Systems, and will advising the ASAE quarter-scale tractor team. His research addresses fundamental topics in controls and system dynamics and modeling. Within these areas, he has specialized in electrohydraulics, the design and control of energy efficient vehicle systems (hybrids), and camless engine actuators and control strategies.
