A Purdue ECE alumnus has been selected to receive the EDAA Outstanding Dissertation Award 2019 in recognition research done as a PhD student at Purdue. Ahmedullah Aziz received his PhD ECE in 2019. His dissertation was entitled “Device-Circuit Co-design Employing Phase Transition Materials for Low Power Electronics.”

Eight ECE graduate students were recipients of the 2020 Magoon Excellence in Teaching Award - Md Faizul Bari, Stanley Richard Doerger, Tulasi R. Haritsa, Guan Zhe Hong, Mingxuan He, Somosmita Mitra, Amritha Prasad, and Steve Rausch. The honor recognizes outstanding teaching assistants in memory of Estus H. and Vashti L. Magoon who influenced the lives of many engineering educators early in their careers through this award.

Soham Saha, a graduate student in Purdue's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected to attend the prestigious 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, an invitation-only gathering in Lindau, Germany. Saha is among more than 600 young scientists from 101 countries chosen to attend the gathering.

A paper written by Purdue ECE Prof. Hong Tan and her PhD student Juan Sebastian Martinez has been selected for the IEEE Transactions on Haptics Best Paper Award 2020. The paper, entitled "A Phonemic-Based Tactile Display for Speech Communication," was co-authored by Charlotte Reed (MIT) and Purdue ECE alumnus Ali Israr, who is now with Facebook.

Purdue University researchers created technology that uses optical imaging to better help surgeons map out tumors in the body and help them understand how certain diseases affect activity in the brain. The work is published in the journal IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging.

David J. Love, the Nick Trbovich Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2020 Purdue Engineering Faculty Excellence Award for Research. The award is for an exceptional research contribution presented/published within the last five years by a Purdue Engineering faculty member that has been significantly recognized by experts in the field.

The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Thursday (April 2) approved the naming of Purdue’s new STEM Teaching Lab facility as the Chaney-Hale Hall of Science. The naming recognizes the joint leadership gifts from Jeannie (Bachelor of Science 1961, Pharmacy) and Jim Chaney, and Judy (BS ’61, Pharmacy) and Dave Hale (BS ’59, Electrical Engineering).

As Purdue faculty, staff, and students adjust to remote working, teaching, and learning, ECE alumnus Christopher Svec led a virtual talk to give tips and advice based on his experience. More than 100 students participated in the virtual talk, which took place via Zoom. Svec (BSEE ’99, MSECE ’02) is currently a software engineering manager at iRobot and leads the embedded software team for the Roomba vacuuming and mopping robots. He has been with iRobot for 6 years, and has worked remotely for the last five.

An unsuccessful test launch Feb. 15 could have derailed a year's worth of work for PSP-SL. But the interdisciplinary team didn't let that happen.

Virtual reality headsets and application programs for VR are not gaining traction with users because of a chicken-and-egg dilemma, lack of VR content and slow market penetration of custom-made VR units. Purdue University researchers have created a new approach to VR that allows multiple players to interact with the same VR game on smartphones and provides new opportunities for enterprise, education, health care and entertainment applications.
