PhD student Hsuan-Hao Lu has been awarded a 2019 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

Lu is currently working in Ultrafast Optics and Optical Fiber Communications Lab led by Prof. Andrew Weiner, and conducts collaborative research with the Quantum Information Science Group at Oak Ridge National Lab. His work focuses on photonic quantum information processing, and especially the demonstration of quantum frequency processor, capable of performing a variety of high-fidelity operations on frequency qudits.

Jeremy Bos, the SPIE 2019 Scholarship Committee Chair says Lu and other scholarship recipients “represent the future of the society and have been recognized for their potential long-term contribution to the field.”

“It is exciting and inspiring to be introduced to these students, their impressive accomplishments, and how optics and photonics fits into their professional development,” says Bos.

Overall, SPIE awarded $298,000 in optics and photonics education scholarships to 84 outstanding SPIE Student Members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated and selected and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee.
