Engineer, U.S. Army officer, medical doctor, judge, and skydiver

Sue Hudson Abreu received a bachelor’s degree in industrial design engineering in 1978. Following her time at Purdue, she earned an MD in four years at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Abreu then embarked on a military career, serving in various capacities, including as a nuclear medicine consultant to the Army surgeon general, until her retirement as a colonel in 2002. She held notable professional leadership positions, such as president of the American College of Nuclear Physicians and president of the Nuclear/PET Division at the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. Subsequently, Abreu obtained a JD degree from Oklahoma City University's School of Law in 2011, which led to her becoming an administrative judge at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2015 and an associate chief administrative judge in 2019, serving on the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. Beyond her professional endeavors, Abreu is an avid skydiver, serving as team manager and team physician for the U.S. Parachute Team. Purdue presented her with an Outstanding Interdisciplinary Award in 2001 and a Distinguished Engineering Alumna Award in 2020. In 2004, she was honored as a Purdue Old Master and inducted into the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Tri-Service Hall of Fame.
