First woman named a senior fellow at Rolls-Royce

Mary Lee Gambone 

Mary Lee Gambone graduated with a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering in 1982. After completing her undergraduate studies, she earned a master’s degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD at the University of Virginia. Gambone commenced her career at General Motors’ Allison Gas Turbine Division before becoming team lead and materials engineer at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, where she served for seven years. In 2001, Gambone transitioned to Rolls-Royce, joining its Manufacturing Technology Group as a development engineer. Throughout her 23-year tenure at Rolls-Royce, she demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise, holding key positions in various divisions. Her contributions led to her promotion to global head of materials engineering. In 2022, Gambone became the first woman in Rolls-Royce’s history to attain the title of senior fellow. In addition to her Rolls-Royce accomplishments, Gambone is active in professional organizations. Currently, she serves as one of 11 directors of SAE International, contributing her expertise to shape the future of engineering practices and standards. Purdue recognized Gambone with an Outstanding Materials Engineer Award in 2013, Cooperative Education Hall of Fame membership in 2015, and a Distinguished Engineering Alumna Award in 2024.
