Purdue’s first female engineering graduate – in 1897

Martha Dick Stevens
Martha Dick Stevens received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1897, becoming the first woman to earn an engineering degree from Purdue. She also earned two other Purdue degrees: a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biology in 1894 and a master’s degree in science in 1898. While a Purdue student, Stevens was president of the Photographic Club, vice president of the Philalethean Literary Society and YWCA, and alumni editor of the Purdue Exponent. After graduating, Stevens taught college mathematics before retiring to care for her aging parents. Purdue’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering observed the 120th anniversary of Stevens’ graduation with a yearlong celebration in 2016-17.
