Chair and CEO of a Fortune 500 company

Jennifer Weerts Rumsey earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1996 and an honorary doctorate in 2024. She began working as an intern for Cummins, Inc. as a Purdue undergraduate. Following in the footsteps of her father, a former Cummins engineer, Rumsey has achieved a series of career milestones at one of the world’s largest power companies. In 2015, Rumsey was appointed chief technical officer, marking the first time a woman held this position in the century-old company. In 2022, she made history again by becoming Cummins’ first female CEO. The following year, Rumsey was the first woman elevated to chair of this publicly traded company with 75,000 employees. She also serves as a board member of Hillenbrand and has been named a fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers and one of Fortune’s 50 Most Powerful Women. Purdue presented Rumsey with a 40 Under 40 Award, an Outstanding Mechanical Engineer Award in 2016, and a Distinguished Engineering Alumna Award in 2017.
