Inventor of the Banbury Mixer

Fernley H. Banbury

Fernley H. Banbury graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1906. Throughout his career, he worked exclusively for Farrel Corporation. In 1916, Banbury received a U.S. patent for a groundbreaking mixer capable of blending a wide range of compounds. This invention, known as the Banbury Mixer, underwent testing by the Goodyear Company and marked a turning point in the company's evolution. More than a century later, the Banbury Mixer remains in widespread use. Underscoring the invention’s enduring impact, the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society annually presents the Fernley H. Banbury Award to scientists and engineers who develop production equipment, control systems, and instrumentation that significantly contribute to the rubber industry.
