Xiaokang Qiu, assistant professor in Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected as a Faculty Fellow for the 2022 U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (AFRL-SFFP). The program offers hands-on exposure to Air Force research challenges through research residencies at participating Air Force research facilities for full-time science, mathematics, and engineering faculty at U.S. colleges and universities.

Qiu will spend eight weeks this summer at the AFRL Information Directorate in Rome, NY, to work with AFRL researchers to address some theoretical issues related to learning algorithms with provable guarantees for problem-solving and decision-making. Jordan Winkler, an ECE PhD student in Qiu’s research group, is also supported by this program to work on this project.

The objectives of the U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program are as follows:

  1. To stimulate professional relationships among U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program participants and the scientists and engineers at Air Force research facilities
  2. To enhance the research interests and capabilities of faculty (both new and experienced researchers) in the U.S. academic community
  3. To elevate the awareness in the U.S. academic community of Air Force research needs and foster continued research at U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program fellows' institutions
  4. To provide the U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program participant opportunities to perform high-quality and meaningful research at Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directorates, Air Force Test Center, the United States Air Force Academy, or the Air Force Institute of Technology
  5. To provide nationally accredited mentoring of academic researchers at technical directorates of the AFRL, Air Force Test Center, the United States Air Force Academy, and the Air Force Institute of Technology.

AFRL-SFFP is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and is administered by Systems Plus, which provides the oversight and administrative structure for the selection and appointment of applicants.
