New Faculty Spotlight: Junjie Qin

junjie qin
Junjie Qin, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Hometown: I grew up in Nanchang, a city in the southern part of China.

What inspired you to get into engineering?

As a child, I always like to make (and sometimes break) things. Later I learned that Engineering is a discipline where I can put such creativity into solving problems of greater societal importance. Besides, I'm always good at math. So engineering is a natural choice for me.

What drew you to Purdue ECE?

As a researcher working in the power systems area, Purdue ECE provides an excellent research environment -- great faculty members to collaborate with, and laboratory facilities with which I can test my research ideas.

What are your research interests?

My primary research interests are to make our electric grid more sustainable and resilient, by applying techniques from control theory, economics, and machine learning. I'm also interested in making other systems more sustainable by exploring their connection with the power grid. One example is transportation electrification.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Movies, reading, and table tennis

Anything else you'd like the Purdue community to know about you?

I spent the last 10 years in California. Moving to Purdue will be my first experience of living on the east side of the U.S. Any suggestions on surviving in the winter are welcome!
