LING 201 is an introductory course covering the core elements relevant for analysis and study of human languages. This is a data-driven class where students learn to analyze languages at several levels, including sound and word patterns (phonetics/phonology/morphology), sentence patterns (syntax) and approaches to the study of meaning (semantics). Practice with theory application to analysis of language provides students a great introduction to properties of the world’s human languages along with developing their analytic skills and ability to make logical arguments. Time permitting, additional sub-fields will be explored.
