The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute has awarded nearly $3 million to a new generation of medical students and researchers at Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame to encourage home-grown innovation in Indiana. Weldon School student, Andrew Koivuniemi, and faculty Ji-Xin Cheng and Riyi Shi were each awarded for their innovative and collaborative work in the Life Sciences.

Michael G. Heinz, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences was elected Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.

Researchers have developed a new type of imaging technology to diagnose cardiovascular disease and other disorders by measuring ultrasound signals from chemical bonds in molecules exposed to a pulsing laser.

Jenna Rickus, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Agricultural & Biological Engineering has been selected to receive support from the Trask Innovation Fund for her research.

Ji-Xin Cheng and Corey Neu have been selected to participate in the 2011-2012 Entrepreneurial Leadership Academy at Purdue University.

In an effort to safeguard children, the Lafayette Rotary Club, led by Weldon School faculty member Bob Hannemann, recently distributed 22,000 pieces of safety literature to local schools.

Dr. Allison Sieving, the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering's Laboratory and Assessment Coordinator, was selected to receive a 2011 Learning Outcomes Assessment Grant.

In the fall semester of 2010, the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering began its own chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta - one of biomedical engineering's only National Honor Societies. Initially founded by Dr. Daniel Reneau of Louisiana Tech University in 1979, AEMB membership is offered to the top fifth of juniors and top third of seniors in biomedical engineering programs.

The annual Student Activities and Organizations awards were given out on April 21 in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom. BME's own Keith Hansen was selected to receive two awards.

Several Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering graduate students were recently recognized for their excellence.
