Novel vaginal speculum design wins Best Overall Award for BME Senior Design

A high percentage of women aged 15-65 avoid pelvic procedures involving speculums due to fear of discomfort, which can lead to increased rates of reproductive health issues. But one Senior Design team at the Weldon School devised a solution includes a novel opening mechanism, a tri-valvular conical blade design, variable blade sizes, and a novel locking mechanism. This novel design allows for easy insertion and less patient discomfort, and with transparent blades, physicians will have improved visualization of the vaginal wall.

Senior Design teams present innovative, award-winning solutions to healthcare needs

Four senior design teams were recognized for outstanding achievement at the annual Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Senior Design Projects Presentations and Demonstrations. On Dec. 13, 18 teams presented innovative engineering solutions to address various real patient, clinical, and healthcare needs to an audience that included the teams’ industry and clinical partners, the Purdue community, and the public.

Diversity in mentors, sponsors, and projects enrich senior design program

Magic can happen when senior design teams are mentored by seasoned industry and clinical partners. A real-needs project brought to a creative student team can yield surprising and wonderful results and is rewarding for both mentors and mentees. The Weldon School welcomes a diverse mix of mentors and sponsors and provides a supportive environment for development of a vast array of projects.

AutoCPR senior project nationally recognized

Four students from the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering took on the challenge of using engineering to try to save lives in Ecuador and other countries, and their efforts have been nationally recognized.

StrideSmart team wins first place for device design in Purdue’s Spark Challenge

A team of Weldon School senior design students won first place at Purdue’s Spark Challenge in December 2016. The team presented their project, “StrideSmart,” a smart assistive cane attachment for the geriatric population to help monitor patient walking patterns and potentially prevent falls for users. The device would notify users of irregular walking patterns in real-time through a companion smartphone application.
