An innovation at Purdue University could allow highly sensitive detection of an infectious disease such as HIV or whooping cough by using a low-cost, automated, point-of-care test similar in packaging to a pregnancy test.

The 2017 Martin C. Jischke Outstanding International Student of the Year Award has been presented to Bahar Dhowan, a senior in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. This award was established by president emeritus Martin C. Jischke to honor an international Purdue student who has helped the University welcome and connect people of all cultures. Honorees also must demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, character and service.

Richard Borgens, the Mari Hulman George Professor of Applied Neuroscience in the College of Veterinary Medicine and a professor of biomedical engineering is featured in Purdue Today's "Inventors and Innovators" series. Borgens, in collaboration with Riyi Shi and Andrew Blight (former Purdue professor), developed the drug Ampyra, which has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for improving motor function in patients with multiple sclerosis.

A "chemical imaging" system that uses a special type of laser beam to penetrate deep into tissue might lead to technologies that eliminate the need to draw blood for analyses including drug testing and early detection of diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

The prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program has offered Andre Woloshuk, a senior in Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, a grant to Poland. He is one of three Purdue University students to receive a grant offer. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the most renowned U.S. program for students and young professionals to forge ties to foreign countries. It operates in more than 140 countries and fully-funds a post-baccalaureate year abroad.

Five Weldon School graduate students were honored at the 2017 College of Engineering Graduate Student Research, Teaching and Service Awards Ceremony on April 19.

Graduate students Elizabeth Phillips and Shruthi Suresh won first place at the 2017 Purdue University Chapter of Sigma Xi Graduate Student Poster Competition in the engineering sciences division. The students received their awards at the annual chapter banquet on April 12.

Graduate student Joyatee Sarker received the Emily M. Wadsworth Graduate Mentoring Award on March 22nd. The award recognizes special contributions made to the mentoring of women at Purdue and in the community.

A dozen graduate students participated in the inaugural Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Thesis Competition, held on March 23. Orlando Hoilett was the overall winner. Divya Tankasala won second place and was the Crowd Favorite. A few days later, Hoilett also won the People’s Choice Award at Purdue’s Three Minute Thesis Competition.
