Weldon School graduate students receive awards for outstanding teaching, research, and service

Five Weldon School graduate students were honored at the 2017 College of Engineering Graduate Student Research, Teaching and Service Awards Ceremony on April 19.

Elizabeth Phillips was the recipient of the College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award. This award recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in research through peer-reviewed publications, awards for research, leadership, academic achievement and participation in professional societies. Phillips is advised by Jacqueline Linnes.

Matthew Pharris was the recipient of the College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Student Service Award. This award honors a graduate student who has contributed over time to the quality, reputation and success of the graduate student community in the school, college or university. Pharris is advised by Tamara Kinzer-Ursem.

Four students who taught BME courses were also honored during the ceremony for receiving the College of Engineering 2017 Magoon Award for Excellence in Teaching: Aya Saleh (advised by Tamara Kinzer-Ursem), Nimisha Bajaj (advised by David Umulis), Orlando Hoilett (advised by Jacqueline Linnes) and Chris Quinkert, a BME alum who is currently an ECE graduate student. The award is given to outstanding teaching assistants in memory of Estus H. and Vashti L. Magoon, who have influenced the lives of many engineering educators early in their careers through this award.
