Student innovators from the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering earned two of the top awards during Purdue University's 2026 New Venture Challenge, showcasing medical technologies designed to improve patient care while advancing their entrepreneurial ventures.

The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering is celebrating four faculty members who received U.S. patents in July for innovations that address challenges in healthcare, agriculture and advanced sensing technologies.

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering graduate student Ibtsaam Qadir has received a $10,000 Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) Trainee Pilot Grant to support research exploring how artificial intelligence can help radiologists detect pancreatic cancer earlier and improve patient care.

For eight weeks this summer, five high school students traded textbooks for lab benches as they joined Purdue University's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering for the 2026 High School Summer Research Internship. Launched in 2023, the experiential learning program introduces students to the growing field of biomedical engineering while providing hands-on research experience and a glimpse into how the discipline is shaping the future of patient care.

“I love helping students understand their superpowers,” says Miller, associate professor of engineering practice in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and assistant vice provost in Indianapolis. “I think each student has a super strength — and sometimes they don’t know what it is. I get to discover what that is in my conversations and work with students. Figuring out what aspects of themselves they can lean on makes them better people.”
