Sigma Xi is a non-profit honor society of nearly 75,000 scientists and engineers who are elected because of their research achievements or potential. The society awards grants annually to promising young researchers and sponsors a variety of programs.

The Purdue University chapter of Sigma Xi was established in 1909 and currently has over 400 active members. The chapter fosters and recognizes outstanding research at Purdue and sponsors activities at all levels from high school through post-graduate and faculty.

The chapter hosts an annual Graduate Student Research Awards Competition in the format of a scientific poster session. A monetary prize and recognition for outstanding posters is awarded in multiple research areas: life sciences, physical sciences, engineering sciences, behavioral and social sciences, and post-doctoral research.
